Playing a note on the flute correctly?

After a while I heard that I'm not suppose to tongue at the beginning of the note as I usually do but to just blow instead. I don't know if my habits have changed to tonguing the beginning of the note or not. When I blow it feels like the notes are dragging on me compared to me originally tonguing the beginning of the note as a start off. I feel that I have to slur all the notes for it to sound nicer but I believe I am suppose to break after every quarter note. So how exactly am I suppose to play a note on the flute correctly?
