What is the best thing to do with my friend.?

My best friend is amazing, we have been best friends all through school. she's smart, homely sensitive, caring, The issue i am having is that i feel that at specific social event's weather it is best for her to come. I went to a pretty up market social gathering with some work colleagues including Senior members of my company. It was a black tie thing, steak dinners, crystal wear, the works. I invited my friend as my plus one because when i said something about it her eyes lit up and said she would love to be able to go to a party like this. The problem started when we had a ice cream dessert and she mixed it up to a liquid consistency. then she started talking about how much money she makes a week,spending habits and questioned friends religious beliefs. I love her to death yet two of my work colleagues suggested that maybe i shouldn't invite her to work functions because of her "apparent lack of social grace". my friend believes she is a women that poses social grace. Should I take her to these event's knowing people are bitching about her or just make her feel special while doing other activity.'s. We are both 28.
