Is it alright to use racial slurs if you are of that race?

I know many people who use racial slurs and don't care because they're from that race. I'm african american but I never use the "n" word however I know that many other african americans do but they say it's fine because they're black which I don't believe is true at all. They keep telling me that I'm being stuck up by not saying the "n" word but I don't see how that is. For me racial slurs are instruments of hate and if you're going to use an instrument of hate against your own race then that is simply silly. I don't tell other people what to say, nor do I nag them about it, but I personally don't use them and that's just me but some people don't get that.
